Excursion to neighboring Caye Caulker!

Caye Caulker & the Split from above

There are lots of ways you can visit our island neighbor, Caye Caulker, where “Go Slow” is taken very seriously! There are no paved streets on this small island (actually split in to two by Hurricane Hattie in 1961; that divide is now called the Split) and it is a great place to spend a couple of hours or a day (or a week?).

How do you get there? Many tour operators offer a stop on Caye Caulker as part of a full day excursion that might include another activity, such as snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve or manatee watching at Swallow Caye. You can also hop aboard a water taxi (either San Pedro/Belize Express or Caribbean Sprinter) and take the 25 minute trip over and wander at your leisure (just don’t miss the last water taxi back at 6:15 pm!).

There are a number of restaurants & small shops, and of course the iconic hang out spot is at the Split, where you can swim, sun, eat, drink….

But there are also a few things peculiar to the island! Visit the Seahorse Ranch Reserve at the Iguana Reef Inn‘s beach; best chance of viewing one of these fascinating creatures is in the morning or evening, but check it out for sure whenever you’re there are you could get lucky!

Just a couple of docks north of the reserve you’ll find a small pier where there are always large tarpon milling around. Jump in & have a swim with them, but they’d probably prefer that you shell out BZ$5 for a bag of sardines and feed them! (See the video below — don’t worry, tarpon have no teeth!! )

The area north of the split is getting more & more developed as time goes on….you can check out the new resorts there too!

And then sail or motor on home at the end of a good day…and of course cue Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” as you pull up to your home dock! Because this is where we all long to be of course….
